Ras Shorty I was a Trinidadian musician, songwriter, and innovator best known as the creator of soca music, a genre that blended calypso with East Indian musical influences and later evolved into one of the Caribbean’s most popular musical styles. His creativity and vision transformed the sound of Caribbean music and earned him recognition as one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most influential cultural figures.

Born Garfield Blackman in Princes Town, Trinidad, he began his career as a calypsonian, performing under the name Lord Shorty. During the 1960s and 1970s, he became known for his energetic performances and hit songs that pushed the boundaries of traditional calypso. Seeking to create a new sound that reflected the diverse cultural heritage of Trinidad and Tobago, he experimented with Indian rhythms and instruments, leading to the development of soca, short for “Soul of Calypso.”
